How to get user feedback before having a product or even UX and UI design
Smart founders don’t just build - they ask first. Here’s how to collect and apply user feedback early, before wasting time and money on designs or code.
Getting authentic feedback is harder than it looks. One-on-one chats take time. Scaling it across hundreds or thousands of users? That’s even trickier.
Here’s how we (and our clients) do it before investing in UI, UX, or development.
Why feedback early beats fixing later
Adjusting a short brief to market needs? Quick.
Tweaking wireframes? A few hours.
Rebuilding an app already coded? Costly.
The earlier you ask, the easier - and cheaper - it is to adapt.
But it’s not just about listening. It’s about asking the right questions, filtering answers, and still keeping people engaged so they feel heard.
Three ways to gather feedback
1. One-on-one talks
Turn your idea into something people can react to—a lean pitch deck, a business model canvas, or mock-ups in Canva/Figma. Then talk directly to potential users. Ask focused questions. Patterns will appear.
2. Scaled conversations
When your audience is in the hundreds or thousands, use surveys, polls, or online groups. The old advice was to stick to closed questions, but with AI, you can now collect and analyse open responses at scale.
3. Applying feedback smartly
Not all feedback deserves the same weight.
-
Stage matters: MVP vs. enterprise onboarding = different priorities.
-
Source matters: a friend’s opinion isn’t the same as a potential customer’s.
-
And yes - it’s okay to say no. Users aren’t always right.
At the end of the day, it’s your product vision. Don’t lose it.
Why it matters
Collecting feedback early helps you avoid costly detours and moves you closer to product-market fit. It’s not always simple—you’ll juggle investor expectations, user demands, and your own vision—but it’s worth it.
And you don’t have to do it alone. A skilled UX designer can help filter noise, weigh trade-offs, and translate feedback into requirements and design drafts you can actually act on.
Our take
User feedback is the cheapest insurance policy against building the wrong thing. Talk early, scale smartly, filter wisely.
