Surrey Is Stronger Together: How We're Building a Business Ecosystem for the Whole County
If you are visiting the upcoming Business Show London next month, here is the question I want to leave you with.
Surrey is home to more than 110,000 businesses. It is the second largest economy outside of London, with world-class universities, a highly skilled workforce and one of the most internationally connected locations in the UK, sitting between Heathrow, Gatwick and Southampton Port. The talent here is extraordinary and the ambition is genuine, yet too often those businesses operate in parallel rather than in concert.
At Surrey Chambers of Commerce, we are working to change that. Not by adding another networking event to the calendar, but by building something more deliberate: a genuine business ecosystem for the whole county.
What we mean by an ecosystem
An ecosystem means something more than a directory of contacts or a calendar of events. It is a community where knowledge, opportunity and support move in multiple directions, and where every layer has something to give to the others. Where established businesses actively support emerging ones. Where procurement decisions favour local suppliers. Where knowledge, whether about AI adoption, international trade or leadership, spreads across the community rather than sitting locked inside individual organisations.
Surrey Chambers supports businesses at every stage of that journey. From founders and start-ups finding their feet, through growing SMEs and scaling enterprises, to the large anchor businesses whose decisions shape employment and investment across the county. Schools, colleges, universities, hospitals, military communities and the third sector are all part of the same Surrey economy, and all part of the ecosystem we are building.
Surrey Chambers exists to connect those layers and make sure the value that exists across the county actually circulates within it.
Why AI makes this more urgent
The data on AI adoption is compelling. Workers using AI tools save an average of 7.5 hours per week, worth around £14,000 per employee per year according to LSE research. SMEs adopting AI are seeing productivity gains of up to 133% according to the University of St Andrews. The British Chambers of Commerce has named AI adoption as one of three things essential to breaking the UK out of its low-growth cycle.
But the businesses gaining the most from AI are not simply the ones that subscribed to a tool. They are the ones that built structured workflows, learned from others and had access to knowledge they could apply to their own context. That is exactly what a functioning ecosystem provides. Through our BCC partnership, every Surrey Chambers member has direct access to the BCC AI Academy, a structured, practical programme designed for business owners and their teams.
What Surrey Chambers offers
We connect businesses with 7,000 organisations across the county and provide practical support across HR, legal, tax and health and safety. We offer dedicated international trade expertise and export documentation support. Through our Partner programme, Surrey's largest and most influential organisations can shape the county's business agenda, access the BCC's national policy voice and be recognised publicly as businesses leading Surrey.
Our five Surrey Local Leader badges, covering ESG and Sustainability, Community and Business Support, Thought Leadership, Apprenticeships and Skills, and Source in Surrey, allow Partner businesses to carry evidence of their contribution into tender submissions, recruitment campaigns and client conversations.
Through our Generation Next community and our relationships with Surrey's colleges and universities, we are actively building the next generation of talent across the county.
Connect with Surrey Chambers
Whether you are a Surrey business looking to grow, a large organisation wanting to strengthen your local roots, or a business leader who wants to give something back to the county that helped build you, Surrey Chambers is where that conversation starts.
Surrey has the talent, the businesses, the location and the ambition. What it needs now is the collective decision to use them together.
We would love to talk about what Surrey's business ecosystem can do for you, and what you can do for it.
